You pay for the hardware, you keep it in your house or on your property, but you are increasingly just leasing its functionality. The intersection of planned obsolescence, digital rights management, and aggressive anti-repair practices is no longer just a consumer frustration—it is a direct threat to property rights, economic independence, and global sustainability.


    Consider the notorious anti-repair practices of John Deere. As their agricultural equipment evolved from mechanical machines to complex computer networks controlled by Electronic Control Units (ECUs), John Deere implemented software locks that effectively locked farmers out of their own tractors. By restricting access to fully functional diagnostic software—specifically their "Service ADVISOR" tool—Deere forced equipment owners to rely exclusively on their authorized dealer network for essential repairs, like resetting electronic fault codes or pairing newly installed parts.

    For years, this meant that a simple fix that once required a basic wrench now required an authorized technician, creating weeks-long service delays during critical, time-sensitive planting and harvest seasons. When crop yields are on the line, these software lockouts can cost farmers tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    The corporate grip on agricultural repair became so severe that it triggered a massive legal backlash. In July 2026, the FTC, alongside five state attorneys general, reached a landmark settlement resolving monopolization claims against John Deere. The joint lawsuit alleged that Deere used these software restrictions to build an artificial monopoly, inflating repair costs and steering business into their own dealer networks. This federal action followed closely on the heels of a separate, massive private class-action lawsuit where Deere agreed to a $99 million settlement with farmers over the exact same repair restrictions. The entire ordeal laid bare a modern corporate playbook: controlling the software means monopolizing the hardware.

    To understand the mechanics of this shift, we must look past the sleek corporate marketing and well-intentioned legislative titles. We must examine the structural barriers, the environmental toll, and the regulatory complicity designed to keep consumers locked into a cycle of constant purchasing and perpetual digital oversight.

The Engineered Expiration: Planned Obsolescence as a Business Model

The modern consumer economy runs on the assumption that your equipment will fail. This isn't an accident of design; it is an engineered expiration date. The data surrounding the decline in product longevity is undeniable:

  • Household Appliances: A shift toward thinner materials and over-computerization has drastically reduced lifespans. While household appliances built in the 1970s typically lasted between 30 and 50 years, modern dishwashers, ovens, and washing machines only operate for about 10 to 15 years. According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, average appliance lifespans measurably declined just between 2010 and 2019.

  • Televisions: While older CRT televisions frequently operated for decades, the lifespan of modern smart TVs built after 2010 averages just five to seven years. Thinner frames and higher operating temperatures place increased stress on components like power boards and LED backlights, making premature failure a feature of the modern design.

  • Smartphones and "Batterygate": Software is increasingly used to artificially limit hardware performance. In 2017, independent internet sleuths proved that Apple was deliberately slowing down the performance of older iPhones. While Apple claimed the software throttling was implemented to prevent unexpected shutdowns as batteries degraded, critics argued it was a calculated move to push users toward premature upgrades—a textbook example of planned obsolescence. The resulting "batterygate" scandal ultimately forced Apple to pay a $113 million multi-state settlement and up to $500 million to settle a separate class-action lawsuit.

    When these inevitable failures occur, the logical solution is to simply swap the broken part. Instead, consumers are met with a maze of proprietary connectors, obscured internal systems, and warranties designed to void the second an unauthorized screwdriver touches the chassis.

    Manufacturers frequently justify these barriers by claiming that devices have become too complex and that independent repairs pose safety, security, and performance risks. However, deep-dive investigations have shattered this narrative:

  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a unanimous report to Congress, titled "Nixing the Fix," which found "scant evidence to support manufacturers’ justifications for repair restrictions".

  • The FTC concluded that there is no empirical evidence to suggest independent repair shops are more likely to compromise or misuse customer data than authorized repair shops.

  • The FTC report also firmly stated that independent repair is no less safe than manufacturer-branded repair, provided there is access to appropriate parts and training.

Regulatory Complicity: The Government's Role in Protecting Monopolies

    Current legislative and regulatory frameworks routinely fail to protect consumer autonomy. There is a deeply ingrained policy bias that favors protecting the proprietary ecosystems of massive tech conglomerates over the rights of independent repair. Government regulators have largely turned a blind eye, allowing corporations to monopolize the repair market, throttle independent technicians, and force consumers into expensive "authorized" repair funnels or complete replacements.

    While federal laws like the 46-year-old Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act legally prohibit companies from requiring the use of specific parts or authorized repair companies to keep a warranty valid, enforcement has been historically weak. This lack of aggressive consumer protection has distinct economic consequences:

  • Repair restrictions substantially increase the total cost of repairs and generate unnecessary wait times for consumers.

  • Faced with outrageous repair costs, many consumers are forced to buy new items instead of repairing damaged ones.

  • This cycle ensures that manufacturers make money on the backs of consumers who are forced to spend more.

  • The FTC noted that the higher cost of repairs disproportionately burdens lower-income Americans and communities of color.

From Passive Negligence to Active Overreach

    The problem extends far beyond a lack of enforcement; in some cases, state governments are actively legislating away hardware autonomy under the guise of public safety.

    In California, lawmakers recently passed AB 2047, a bill requiring consumer 3D printers sold in the state to include technology capable of blocking attempts to print firearms. To enforce this, manufacturers must submit attestations to the Department of Justice confirming their machines are equipped with "firearm blocking technology." 

    However, mandating a digital kill switch effectively forces manufacturers to lock down their firmware, threatening the existence of community-driven open-source software like Marlin and Klipper. By requiring a general-purpose machine to constantly monitor and restrict user files, legislation like AB 2047 actively mandates a walled garden. It shifts the regulatory framework from protecting the consumer's right to modify their hardware to legally requiring manufacturers to restrict it.

    The implications of this built-in surveillance infrastructure stretch far beyond the stated legislative goals. Once a manufacturer establishes a system to scan and reject geometric code before a print begins, the precedent is set for widespread corporate overreach. If an algorithm can be mandated to block one type of file, it takes very little effort to pivot that same technology toward aggressive copyright and patent enforcement. It is a dangerously small step from a safety mandate to an intellectual property filter that stops you from printing a custom figure because it resembles a protected trademark. More concerning for the right to repair, this technology could easily be weaponized by manufacturers to protect their replacement part monopolies. If you take the time to break out the calipers, map out a broken component, and generate a printable STL or STEP file to fix an appliance you already paid for, an overzealous algorithm could classify that CAD file as "proprietary geometry" and refuse to print it. When the machine on your desk is forced to ask for corporate permission every time you hit print, you are no longer fixing the things you own—you are just asking for an allowance.

The Staggering Environmental Toll of a Throwaway Culture

    This regulatory complicity and corporate greed have devastating, measurable consequences for the planet. By incentivizing a throwaway culture, where buying new is pushed as the only viable option, we are generating unsustainable levels of electronic waste. The data provided by the UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2024 exposes the sheer magnitude of the crisis:


  • In 2022, the world generated a staggering 62 million tons of electronic waste, averaging out to 7.8 kg per person.

  • This volume represents an 82% surge since 2010, and global e-waste is projected to reach 82 million tons by 2030.

  • Alarmingly, only 22.3% of the e-waste generated globally in 2022 was formally collected and properly recycled.

  • Because so little is recycled, approximately $62 billion worth of recoverable natural resources were left completely unaccounted for. Looking specifically at raw materials, the e-waste contained $91 billion in value, yet only $19 billion was actually recovered.

  • The manufacturing process that fuels this rapid replacement cycle is incredibly resource-hungry; producing a single computer and its screen requires at least 240kg of fossil fuels, 22kg of chemicals, and 1.5 tons of water.

  • When unrepairable items are inevitably thrown away, the plastics in e-waste can take up to 1 million years to decompose in a landfill, while metals like aluminum can take anywhere from 50 to 500 years to break down.

The Ideology of Nothingness and the Loss of Property Rights

    The increasingly cited prediction that "You will own nothing and be happy" is actively manifesting through these hardware lock-ins. When a manufacturer can remotely disable your device, block a third-party replacement part via a mandatory software update, or legally threaten an independent mechanic for attempting a fix, your property rights are nothing more than an illusion. True consumer freedom looks like having the autonomy to fire up a CAD file, take caliper measurements, and 3D print a replacement chassis when the original manufacturer decides to stop supporting the hardware.

A Call for Longevity: Building for the Future

    We must demand a shift from forced, endless iteration to durable, sustainable design. A balanced economic approach can easily support technological innovation while legally enshrining the fundamental right to repair, modify, and reuse the things we buy.

As the FTC explicitly highlighted, extending the useful lifespan of consumer products unconditionally delays their entry into the waste stream and reduces the massive amounts of energy used to generate replacement products. Furthermore, providing more repair choices leads to lower costs for the consumer and provides vital economic opportunities for independent entrepreneurs and local businesses.
